To me this question is a lot like smoking in the 1960’s – when you talk to someone that was a smoker back then, they usually say “we didn’t know it was bad for us.” Maybe… but they suspected it was bad. I don’t believe that it never crossed anyone’s mind that smoking might not be the greatest idea. And just because the technology was not available to PROVE it was bad, common sense kept at least some people from lighting up.
So goes the pure cosmetics debate. At best, ingredients used in most cosmetics and skincare products are unproven; at worst, some ingredients are known carcinogens. As a WebMD article put it:
"The evidence may not be as definitive as some would like, but there are some strong associations suggesting women routinely exposed to some of these ingredients may increase their risk of developing breast cancer later in life," says Vassar College professor Janet Gray, PhD, who, together with experts from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, compiled a report on what we know so far about the environmental links to breast cancer.

And so, the adage “better safe than sorry” comes to mind when considering the importance of using pure skincare products. We just don’t know what the lasting effects the cosmetic and skincare products we use will have.. While they can be tough to come by, there are more and more new products available that provide truly pure skincare options. And they’re not patchouli oil and mud masks. Anti-aging pure cosmetics like the Miessence Firming Eye & Neck Serum (http://www.repurify.com/shop/firming-eye-neck-serum-2.html) provide best-in-class results right along with the peace of mind that comes from knowing it’s a pure skincare product.
And much like any health issue, the need for pure skincare is particularly crucial with moms-to-be or families with young kids. The WebMD article offers more information with their usual calm, rational perspective:
"Will you get cancer, or harm your baby, because you use lipstick? Very unlikely. But what worries those of us involved with cancer prevention is that we don't know the cumulative effects of these chemicals, or the synergistic effects of one chemical with another, or what role the chemicals found in cosmetics will play when viewed in the broader scope of the overall chemical exposure we get from all facets of our life," says Julia Smith, director of the Lynne Cohen Breast and Ovarian Cancer Prevention Program at the NYU Cancer Institute in New York City.
Pure skincare products are certainly no magic bullet, but products like Earth Mama Angel Baby Shampoo and Body Wash sure can’t hurt (http://www.repurify.com/shop/angel-baby-shampoo-body-wash-2.html). After all, while no one is picketing the skincare aisles at grocery stores, no one is offering definitive proof that these products are proven safe.
Simply put, the evidence and objective research indicates that the pure cosmetics movement is not merely a cause du jour that will blow over like the Atkins diet. Rather, pure skincare is a simple step to help repurify one’s life – and a step that just makes sense.
More and more women – and skincare experts – are touting the virtue of using pure makeup. And mineral cosmetics are growing like crazy as a result. So is mineral makeup really all it’s cracked up to be?
According to WebMD, “Many dermatologists report that because mineral makeup frequently eliminates classic ‘irritants’ – like fragrances, binders, synthetic dyes, and preservatives -- it is considered ‘purer’ and can be kinder to the skin” – score one for pure makeup.
Particularly for those with sensitive skin, "makeup sensitivity is often the result of synthetic dyes, fragrances, and preservatives, so any makeup that eliminates these is going to eliminate some of the related problems," says Kathryn Frew, MD, a dermatologist at Juva Skin and Laser Center and MediSpa in New York City.
But that’s not all there is to the pure makeup debate. Not all mineral makeups are created equal, and it can be a challenge sorting the good from the snake oil.
As WebMD reports, “since there is no set regulation for what constitutes a ‘mineral’ makeup, any product containing minerals as a primary ingredient can be marketed as such -- even if it contains a whole lot of other ‘less natural’ ingredients.” So, just as with the word “natural” in food, the word “mineral” in cosmetics does not necessarily equate to a truly pure makeup. (full article at http://www.webmd.com/health-ehome-9/mineral-makeup)
The Derm Blog (http://thedermblog.com/2008/08/04/is-mineral-makeup-better-for-your-skin/) doesn’t mince words on this fact: “there is no regulation for what constitutes a mineral makeup. Don’t be fooled by makeups labeled as ‘all natural minerals.’ A company can put artificial fillers, preservatives, or dyes in a makeup, and so long as it contains minerals, they can claim it is mineral makeup.”
Just as the FDA has very little control over the ingredients in cosmetics, “the FDA does not check to see if the product contains natural minerals... there is no requirement for a company to validate claims that its makeup is natural.” Pure makeup seekers beware.
So it appears that even visiting mineral makeup shops in the mall or department store does not decidedly deliver truly pure makeup. The explosive growth of pure makeup, including mineral cosmetics, in recent years has driven many companies and retail stores to dress up their offerings in this space – and it’s left to the shopper to research, study, review, analyze, and seek out real, pure makeup. Without a doubt, it’s a confusing proposition.
But this growth, along with the wealth of information available online, has also inspired entrepreneurs to help women find the purest options. Stores like www.repurify.com offer pure makeup products and mineral makeup products that are certified pure by objective third parties like the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) and GoodGuide (www.goodguide.com).
And so the virtues of mineral makeup appear to be legit. But like any endeavor towards healthier living, it requires equipping yourself with the knowledge to make informed decisions. The good news is, much of that information is just an online search away!
